Home advantage in the brazilian championship series A and the brazilian cup
Abstract
The objective of the study was to analyze the home advantage in the Brazilian Championship 2017 series and in the 2015/2016 and 2017/2018 Brazilian Cup. The sample consisted of 620 matches, 380 matches of the Brazilian Championship and 240 matches in the first two phases of 2015 to 2018 of the Brazilian Cup. The method used to verify the home advantage was that of Pollard. The match data was collected by the official website of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). For statistical analysis, we used the descriptive analysis of absolute and relative frequency and the chi-square test (X2) and adopting p<0.05. It was concluded that there was the home advantage in the Brazilian championship of series A and this phenomenon can influence the placement of the teams in the competition. In turn, the home advantage in the Brazilian Cup was not found in the first two phases in 2015, 2016 and 2018, except in 2017, when there was home advantage in the second phase.
