An analysis of the influence of the host country on their performance in the men's football world cup editions
Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the host country on its performance in the editions of the Men's Football World Cup, that is, to verify if the fact of a country hosting a World Cup edition positively influences its performance during the World Cup. To carry out this study, we considered all editions of the World Cups held between 1930 and 2018, totaling 21 editions, and, for purposes of analysis, the year 2002 was considered twice because it has two host countries. For data analysis we used percentages, descriptive statistics (mean, maximum and minimum), graphs and the non-parametric Sign Test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in the position of the national team when it is a host country compared to the other editions of the World Cup, where there is an average gain of 5.12 in terms of final position in the World Cup when the national team. is the host country. This suggests that the four countries that will host the next two World Cups should get a better final position than in the last editions in which they participated (with the exception of debut Qatar), but are unlikely to be champions as they would need to get a position gain greater than the historical average gain.
