Relative age effect in u-17 world cup FIFA of 2017
Abstract
The relative age effect is a phenomenon that can influence the selection process of players by their selections. This phenomenon may privilege one group of players to the detriment of others. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the relative age effect at the U-17 World Cup in 2017. The birth dates of 494 athletes were collected and divided into quartiles: Q1 (January-March), Q2 (April-June), Q3 (July-September) and Q4 (October-December). A descriptive analysis was performed using the chi-square test (X²), being p<0.05, using SPSS for Windows® software version 18.0. It was identified, in relation to the number of athletes, Q1=40.08%; Q2=24.29%; Q3=21.86%; Q4=13.76%. It is concluded that throughout the world the relative age effect was present and there was a prevalence of athletes born in Q1.
