Effectiveness and offensive performance analysis of the Soccer's World Cup: Russia 2018

Abstract

The success in the soccer's field is directly related to the offensive efficiency during the game. Considering that the World Cup is a great opportunity to observe the current best teams and players, the objective of the present study is to describe the effectiveness of the offensive performance of the 21st Soccer World Cup: Russia 2018. The data of this observational descriptive research were composed of 169 goals, 108 assists, 1182 shots and 59211 passes made during the World Cup. The results showed that the mean per departure of all variables analyzed was higher in the knockout phase. 32,5% of the goals were from a dead ball situation, 13,6% were from penalties. 18,9% were headed goals and 59,8% were scored in the second half. 20,4% of the goals were scored by defensive players, 41,4% by midfielders and 38,2% by forwards, disregarding the 12 own goals. 19,4% of the assists were from dead ball situation and 55,6% were made by midfielders. 84,71% of the goals were made inside the penalty area and 31.48% of the assists were made from the midfield offensive zone. It was concluded that the effectiveness of the offensive performance of the 21st World Cup: Russia 2018 was identified by 169 goals (2,64 goals per game), 108 assists, 1182 (18,47 per match) shots, 501 (42,4%) shots were on target and of these 501 shots on target, 33,7% resulted in goals, totaling an average of 7,0 shots needed to score a goal.
