Abstract

Objective:The aim of this research focuses on the analysis of possession in teams on different continents at the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010TM®. Method: We analyzed all the matches (n=48) of the group stage of 32 teams participating, a total sample of 96 selections. The teams were classified into groups according to the 6 football confederations linked to official FIFA, which are the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Confédération Africainede Football (CAF), Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL) Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The group UEFA was divided into UEFA top, and the three best placed teams in the competition. Result: The main results show the following values: AFC (30.9±4,5min), CAF (33.5±4,3min), CONCACAF (32.1±5,8min), CONMEBOL (37.1±6,3min), OFC (31.2±1,9min), UEFA (33.5±4,7min), UEFA top (38.5±2,7min). Conclusion: We conclude that the total time of possession in the game was greater for UEFA top and CONMEBOL compared to AFC and CAF, and for UEFA top against UEFA and CONCACAF. When considering the area sof the field, it was verified that there was more ball possession in midfield zone, with lower values of AFC and CAF in comparison with the groups CONMEBOL and UEFA top.
