Which technical and tactical performance variables differentiate the soccer teams of the Brazilian Men's Football Championship Serie A?
Abstract
The present study aimed to describe and compare technical and tactical performance variables of teams that competed in the Brazilian Men's Football Championship, Serie A. Thus, 380 games played in the year 2021 were analyzed. their classification at the end of the competition, as follows: G1 (teams classified for the Liberators of America Cup/ Brazil's Cup); G2 (teams qualified for the South American Football Cup); G3 (teams not directly classified for any competition) and G4 (teams relegated to Serie B). Subsequently, the variables of the total number of shots, number of shots on goal, ball possession, number of passes, and pass accuracy were compared between these groups. The main findings demonstrate that kicks on goal (F(3): 9.647, p<0.001), ball possession (F(3): 14.239, p<0.001), number of passes (F(3): 17.854, p <0.001) and pass accuracy (F(3): 16.598, p<0.001) were higher in G1 compared to the other groups. In addition, the number of kicks was higher in G1 compared to G3 (F(3, 756) = 4.921, p=0.002). In conclusion, teams classified for the Copa Libertadores da América/Copa do Brazil (G1; 1st to 6th place) presented higher performance variables than the other teams participating in the Brazilian Men's Football Championship Serie A.
