Evaluation of visual efficiency in athletes belonging to the juvenile division of the basic forces of a professional football team
Abstract
Introduction: Sports place an incredible demand on the human visual system. If there is any anomaly or limitation of any of the factors that make up the visual system, the athlete's performance may be affected. Objective: To describe the state of the visual, accommodative function and ocular motility of athletes belonging to the juvenile division of the basic forces of a professional soccer team in the year 2022. Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. The entire population of athletes was counted during the period studied. Results: The participation was 65 male players, whose average age was 18 years. The most relevant data in relation to visual function was that 98.5% of the athletes had normal visual acuity; Regarding the accommodative function, the amplitude of accommodation is decreased, 50.8% and 47.6% in the right eye and left eye respectively. Ocular motility, above 95%, was found to be normal; the fusional reserves in distant vision, it was presented that for the negative ones, they were increased in 60% of the players and as for the positive ones, they were found decreased in 46.2%. Discussion: The assessed athletes generally present a very good state of visual function, accommodative function and ocular motility. Conclusions: The development of sports practices of the population under study has normal visual function values, which guarantees the adequate performance of the players on the playing field due to the integration of the visual sense with the skills and abilities of the sports discipline.
