The performance of brazilian football teams in the moments pre and post change of command
Abstract
The football, most popular sport in the world, is played by 22 players, but there is some people that impact the game from the outside of the field. Among these people the coach is one of the most important and, that’s why, in many cases, he is taken as accountable for the success or the failure of the team. The purpose of this study was to analyze the performance of Brazilian football teams in the moments before and after a change of command. Changes in command of 23 teams that played series A and/or B were observed for three seasons, from 2017 to 2019. These changes could be added in up to 3 comparison stages. where the coachs before and after the change had their performance compared in 5 (1st stage) 10 (2nd stage) or 15 games (3rd stage). After data analysis in SPSS software, it was found that, in the first two stages, there was a statistically significant difference between the averages of performance, where the performance after the change was better in both stages. Meanwhile, in the third stage the averages didn’t show difference statistically significant. The results found bring up the question of whether comando changes are really the best option when looking for a short-term improvement in performance, with changes leading to a gain of just over two points. As for the long-term, a larger sample of cases is necessary to reach a better understanding of the results.
