Football World Cup: a Longitudinal Analysis of Athletes Called Up for the Brazilian Football Team between 1974 and 2018
Abstract
Introduction: The Football World Cup is an international competition that is currently held every four years and is considered the most important football tournament in the world. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 269 players who were called up to compete in the World Football Championships between the 1974 and 2018 editions. 12 editions of the event were analyzed. The samples were collected from the following websites: FIFA's official website, oGol, Transfermarkt and CBF's official website. Data were analyzed descriptively through the distribution of absolute and relative frequency. Results: It is observed that 65.4% of players were born in the Southeast region, followed by 17.4% in the South region, 11.8% in the Northeast region, 3.4% in the Midwest region and 1.4% in the North region. The states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro had the highest absolute and relative frequency of athletes called up for the World Cups between 1974 - 2018, 90 (33.46%) and 59 (21.93%) respectively. It was found that in the 1974 and 1978 editions a total of 100% of the sample played in Brazilian football. In the 2014 and 2018 editions, more than 80% of the athletes worked in international clubs. Conclusion: The states belonging to the Southeast region were the ones with the highest percentage of athletes called up for the world cups, in addition, over the years, there was a higher percentage of players who played in international football called up for the world cups compared to the athletes who played in national football.
