The fifth player in the brazilian futsal elite: between a greater chance to finish and the setback danger
Abstract
Futsal is a sport modality that has been increasingly growing, both in relation to the competitive level of teams and players, as well as in the number of players and media support around the world. This fact has stimulated researchers and professionals in the area to seek a better understanding of the game and its variables, using more often the match analysis as a tool. Changes in the sport’s rules bring variations in the functioning of the game and the one that refers to goalkeeper performance represented relevant changes in futsal. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the use of the fifth player in the elite of Brazilian futsal and to identify its effectiveness. We analyzed 14 games in the playoffs of the Liga Nacional de Futsal 2019, through an objective and non-participating systematic analysis, totaling 304 actions with the fifth player. The use of the fifth player was not effective, providing an unfavorable goal balance to the teams. The line-goalkeeper was used more than the goalkeeper-line (64.5% vs. 35.5%; p<0.001). It was also more effective in relation to ball possession (16.8%) and number of shots (26.6%) with statistical difference (p=0.005), however, it brought more losses to the teams (2.6% goals conceded). The strategy was used more frequently when the teams were losing (65.8%; p<0.001), not being classified in the championship (79.6%; p<0.001) and in the last period of the match (61.8%; p<0.001).
