Maximal strength profile of young football athletes
Abstract
Maximal strength has an important contribution to football athletes' performance, cause assists in improving linear speed, change of direction speed, and muscular power, beyond minimizing muscle-skeletal injury risks. This study aims to describe the maximal strength profile of (young) football athletes. With a sample of 39 male football players aged between 18 and 22 years old (body weight= 72,28 ±8,54 Kg; height=176,46 ±7,57 cm), the 1RM values in the bench press, squat, and deadlift exercises were measured and presented categorized by field positions. The relative strength coefficient of the athletes (1RM/body weight) was also measured. Goalkeepers proved to be the tallest and heaviest athletes (186,9 ±5,59 cm; 82,14 ±5,79 Kg), and with higher deadlift 1RM values (135,68 ±19,41 Kg), however, on the bench press and squat exercises, the defenders proved to be the strongest athletes (73,24 ±10,7 Kg e 111,48 ±9,97 Kg, respectively). When the relative strength coefficients are verified, the findings agree with others found in the literature, and there seems to be a prominent relationship between body mass and maximum strength.
