Abstract

One cannot dismiss the view that, through football, the Brazilian learned to express himself, to reveal himself, trying to tell his story from himself, even without great clarity. Born an elitist, in the 1920s the football phenomenon already contaminated players, fans, officials, journalists and coaches. It became popular because it was practiced by simple people, perhaps because of the humble origin of practitioners like Leônidas da Silva. Perhaps, also as a symbolic possibility of equality between blacks and whites. The idea of miscegenation and, particularly, the presence of blacks in the Brazilian social composition, would have - with a great deal of media participation - implanted the view that our racial predispositions would have brought Brazilian swing and malice, in addition to improvisation. It is definitely not so.
